Update:: The recently replacement rotors arrived after 5 days, but thanks to overtime at work and a few things I needed to get done around the house I was finally going to do the work today. Wanna guess how that went???
The replacements they sent are the same wrong rotors I initially received! This is in spite of the initial customer service rep telling me what part number I should’ve gotten and confirming they were in stock and available. This time I was immediately connected to a “senior customer care rep” and she promises that not only did she actually select the right part to ship, but they’re going to overnight the parts. Fingers crossed folks.
I finally got the last parts I needed to do the rear brakes and shocks on the Volt. Thank you very much torque to yield bolts that I had to special order because none of the dealers in my area had any in stock.
Everything came apart pretty smoothly. I got the new shock and shock mount installed no problem. Get the brakes apart and what’s this? The brake disc doesn’t fit!
The kit I purchased shipped with the wrong rotors. Power stop is shipping me replacement rotors, but lord knows how long that will take. At least they’re taking care of the issue though.

TTY hardware is annoying. I know you’re not
supposed
to, but for bolts that only carry sheer force, I’ve reused them in the past.

yike! Don’t do that on Transit rear hub bolts which are carrying mostly shear.

Jesus.
I should clarify- VW went absolutely crazy with TTY bolts in the Mk3. Most are not necessary. In fact, many may
not
actually be stretch bolts- factory service manuals have multi-stage torque procedures for many fasteners that are traditional bolts (for control arm, I think it was “tighten the front bolt to #, then rear to #, then front to #, then rear to #, then front to #, then rear to #). Since the FSM isn’t in print anymore, the Bentley and Haynes manuals based off of the FSM note them as stretch bolts, where the torque procedure was just over the top German-ness to center the arm.
More confusingly, the bolts that hold the axles to the wheel hubs have two torquing procedures, one with a TTY nut procedure (105 fl-lbs then a quarter turn I think?), one explicitly for
reusing
a TTY nut, where you use threadlocker and torque to 200 fl-lbs.

ach, Germans. I can see why you didn’t post the details in your initial response
- TMI!
Those two vans are Transit forum members who had rear brake service by Ford dealers not knowing/caring about/following factory instructions about the TTY hub bolts!
Take home message: d
o the
maintenance yourself!

Yeah, my rationale is partially speculative, coupled with knowledge of what a TTY bolt’s shank looks like. That, and TTY bolts generally do not bear primarily sheer force.
I’ve seen those photos before. I couldn’t imagine losing an axle while driving.

Well, they didn’t
completely
lose the axles. Just 90%

I get a strong feeling that the dealerships feel the same way. The same part number bolt is used on brake caliper brackets for at least 6 other vehicles from GM ; including full size trucks. Since it was out of stock at all the Chevy dealers in my area they must not be replacing them, or I guess they could be replacing them so often that they can’t spare any for over the counter sales.

Damn, that’ll get your attention real quick.

TTY can go fuck itself honestly.

Something kind of similar happened to me a number of years ago. Went to Alder Auto and bought a water pump for the e38. Ended up walking away with a Beck/Arnley. Get it home, open the box, find a water pump but the completely wrong one. Not even close.
Call them up first, bring it back, they hand me another. I open the box, same wrong water pump. Dude pulls up the picture on his computer for the part and confirms what I already knew... Not even close.
He s aid it must have been a misboxing, handed me an Airtec instead. Correct part, never failed again. Good times.
Worst part was that because the car was down I was cabbing it back and forth to the parts store which ended up costing me as much as the pump did, more or less.

It’s amazing how often things like this happen. The true test of customer service is how they step up. Let’s hope this fixes it.

I feel much better about the competency of this lady than the last. She verified what I needed by first getting my vehicle information and then she backtracked by pulling up the part number and verifying that my vehicle was listed on it’s fit guide.
That probably means that now Fed Ex will somehow screw it all up this time, and my parts will end out on a deserted island with Wilson.

I’ve had that happen with a starter. Thankfully I could walk to the store to swap it out, but starters are heavy so it was pretty bad even if it didn’t cost anything.

For what it’s worth, in my experience, TTY bolts usually have a torque value and a turn value associated, i.e. torque to 90 ft-lbs, then turn an additional 120 degrees. The torque is, well, the torque, and the turn add s the stretch. If it’s what you described, torque front, torque rear, go back and torque front, etc. , that might not be TTY and might just be done to spread load evenly and prevent warping or damage, similar to how one (should) torque lug nuts in a star pattern and do it in 2-3 stages, instead of ugga-dugga-ing them down to max torque in a circle.
My Volvo 850 rear suspension uses 2 giant TTY fasteners, which are apparently made of mythical steel and only available in Sweden, so I had to wait 6 weeks to replace them. But, those 2 big bolts and the shock absorbers are literally the only things holding on the entire 850 rear suspension.

You’ll get them after the Titans next super bowl win.

Could be worse. You could’ve said Browns.

That would be cruel.
Besides, they weren’t mentioned in the movie.

If I had a dollar for every time a auto parts store worker told me it was because of “misboxing” I’d be able to pay other people to work on my cars.

Yeah, that’s what I’m assuming it is.
